Haukur was born
in 1981 on the Hrafnagil farm. He was sired by Gáski from Hofsstaðir,
Hálsasveit and his mother was Mósa from Hrafnagil. Haukur was born white but
then "grayed-out." His mother was presented on tournaments earlier that summer
but her score was poor and the judges were not impressed at all. Hjalti, her
owner, was deeply disappointed. He had
expected her to win 1st prize since her footwork was excellent as well as her
willingness. Gáski spent the summer at Hrafnagil grazing and Hjalti decided to
breed Mósa to him. From the very beginning it was clear that Haukur had great
potentials with his energetic and assertive trot. Unfortunately, his
temperament was unstable and he was very apprehensive when it came to people. Therefore
he was castrated when he was 2 years old after great deal of trouble. When Haukur was 5 years old he was bought by
Gísli from Hofsstaðir at a very high price since Hjalti was very reluctant to
sell him. According to Gísli, it took a long time to break Haukur in and the
process was very delicate. In 1991, Haukur was presented to a panel of breeding
judges where he received 1st prize. His score was 9.5 for tolt, 9 for neck,
withers and shoulders. According to Worldfeng
Haukur is one of the three horses which achieved the score of 9.5 for tolt that
particular year. Gísli then took Haukur to compete in tolt at a regional
tournament in Kaldármelar in 1992 which resulted in an overwhelming victory. Haukur
has not participated in any competitions since then but has appeared on
numerous shows and escorted his sire to receive the 1st prize for descendants
in the 1992 Landsmót. Throughout the years he has become known as Gáski's
greatest descendant.
Haukur and
Hrímnir are related since Mósi, Hrímnir's father also sired Mósa; Haukur's
mother.
Haukur is still
alive and residing in Hofsstaðir. No one knows what the future beholds for him
but it is not unlikely that he will participate in tournaments over the next
years.
